Take a little Jaipur home

Stories behind the streets

Look closely: the city has lessons in design, craftsmanship, science and the ways people come together.

1727

A city with a plan

Sawai Jai Singh II founded Jaipur in 1727. Its grid, market avenues and public squares shaped a city built for trade and daily life. The walled city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.

953

Windows with a purpose

Built in 1799 for Sawai Pratap Singh, Hawa Mahal’s 953 jharokhas kept air moving and let royal women watch street life unseen. Beauty and function share the facade.

1734

Science, built in stone

Completed in 1734, Jantar Mantar uses large fixed instruments to observe the sky. Geometry and shadows become tools for measurement. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

1876

The story of the pink

Maharaja Ram Singh had Jaipur painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876. The colour became part of the city’s identity and its reputation for hospitality.

1952

Sawai Man Singh Town Hall

The Town Hall housed Rajasthan’s first Legislative Assembly in 1952 and stayed its home until 2000, linking the royal precinct with the state’s democratic history.
